Club supports cancer charity
Sochin Karate Club has raised funds for Breast Cancer Now through the sale of pink karate belts. Karateka have agreed to set aside their normal belt for the month of October to help raise the profile of the cancer charity.
A number of the club’s members have family members who are undergoing treatment or are survivors of cancer with all of them stressing that regular screening and listening to the warning signs of your body are critical to positive health outcomes.
Kerry Banks, Community Fundraising Volunteer and Campaigner for Breast Cancer Now visited the club this week.
She said: “I am incredibly excited to be here today with everyone from the club supporting us for Wear it Pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“The statistics show that over 56,000 women and 400 men are getting diagnosed each year with breast cancer. This is an indication that more people are checking themselves and more people are surviving. The earlier you detect the more chance you have for it not to metastasize into something more serious.
“Unfortunately the percentage rise of men getting breast cancer is higher than the percentage rise of women getting breast cancer because men are just not checking themselves. So please just check – it could save your life.”
Sochin Karate Club train from 7pm to 8.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays at Kendall Hall, Nunnery Fields, Canterbury. Training sessions are very affordable at just £6 per session, however thanks to a grant from Active Kent and Medway, new women members joining the club can train at a subsidized rate.
